There is only one place that party affiliation will matter, in the primarys (the elections held before the main election). If you register Democrat, you can only vote in the democratic primary..Republican, only in republican primary..Independent, cannot vote in any primary. Other than this, your party affiliation does not matter. In the main elections, you may vote for any candidate from any party. It is important to look at each candidate on an individual basis before making a decisions and not go purely by party lines.

A brief summary of the parties. Note this is only a summary of the parties themselves, individuals within those parties will vary widely in their beliefs:
* Democrats - Tend to be more liberal. Usually represent the best interests of the poor and middle class. More likely to be pro-choice (allow abortion), more tolerant of alternative lifestyles, more willing to accept higher taxes in exchange for better services, more open minded in general.
* Republicans - Tend to be more conservative. Usually represent the interest of businesses and the upper class. Believe that if you give tax breaks to rich people they will trickle the money down to poorer people (hmmm..isn't there a reason they are rich). More willing to cut services for lower taxes. More likely to be anti-abortion, less flexible in opinions.
* Independents - Believe government should be minimalist and that people should have basically total freedom to do whatever they like with almost no laws. (kinda scary & anarchist)

Biggest myth you will encounter: Abe Lincoln was a Republican. In fact, Lincoln was a Republican-Democrat (the other party at the time were called Whigs), which later shortened their name to Democrats and the Whigs became the Republicans.

Best advice I would offer to decide is to read up on some of the past presidents and decide which you like the most. Then go with the party that has the most of them in it. History shows most presidents of same party affiliation will rule in a similar manner, even though they do not realize this is happening at the time.

Mila, I think the best thing you can do is not to listen to the propagandists on this board, but instead take these tests and decide for yourself what you want to do.

I will tell you from many years of experience, you should pick a party because in the end the congress will vote for their party, not for the people who elected them, sad but true.

Welcome my friend to the USA.The land of the free and the home of the brave.I believe that you will see over time the differences in the two partys. With all the other answers you have recieved I'm sure you are more confused than before. The animosity is very obvious in most of the answers. So,I will answer your question without any preference or motivation to sway your decision.Democrates are open minded people that see shades of gray.Repuplicans are moral people that don't see the shades of gray.Hence the names Liberal for Democrates and Conservitive for Republican. The chose is yours that both partys will fight to protect your right to choose.

noooooo.... you're so off in this one. we are no longer right here picking facets because of fact of a few clique. We (as republicans) understand what is going to take place if the Dems get the skill they are in seek of. they are going to make a large number in another us of a that we like. We (US combating men and girls) have laid our lives on the line to guard the way of existence that we like. we are no longer approximately to sit down down and enable them to take it removed from us.
