My son has had that problem since he was 2 months old. He is now 3 and he has cronic croup. It is like a cold, but the cough sounds like a barking noise and happens at night. He can go months without anything and then all of a sudden one night wakes up "barking". So if that is what it souds like then you might want to take her to the doctors. They usually give my son a steroid for it that he has to be on 2 times a day for 3 days. Hope this helps. Good luck.

My son is only 4 months, but he had been coughing w/o a cold too. When I asked his doctor about it, she said it could be allergies. So she told me to give him allergy medicine. Call up her doc and ask to be safe. But, my son also has reflux pretty bad. Is she just coughing? Or, does she make a face that makes you think she has heartburn? My son makes a awful face and coughs, even waking up from sound sleep to do so. If she keeps it up, I'd set an appointment with her doctor to get it all straightened out.

Non Medical advice -Put something under the head end of the mattress so she isn't laying completely flat. I have had a bad cough lately and laying down always triggered it, especially if I laid on my back. Wash her bedding in Ecover. Keep a humidifier in the bedroom.

For medical advice - Phone NHS direct on 0854 46 47.
I would not recommend taking medical advice from strangers when its your daughters health. I would recommend asking a specialist. After all, how do you know if the advice given on here wouldn't do her more harm than good?

It could be several things, one the air may be too dry at night or it could be croup, when she starts coughing, take her into the bathroom and turn the hot shower on as hot as it gets to steam up the bathroom, sit with her in there for about 15 minutes and see if that helps, just be sure when you leave the bathroom she doesn't get chilled from hot steam to cooler rooms.A hot mist humidifier may help at night too. I would take her to the doctor if that doesn't help. Croup is a dry sounding type cough.

Does she have a fever? How long has this been going on? Is it interfering with her sleep much?

It is probably nothing serious, but you might ask your doctor if it could be a sinus infection or that she's allergic to something in her room.

UPDATE: I'VE JUST HEARD THAT WHOOPING COUGH IS INCREASING THESE DAYS. DO BE SURE AND HAVE HER SEEN BY THE DOCTOR, JUST IN CASE!

Try propping her up a little with a pillow under the sheet (so she can't get herself under it in the night) or a wedge of foam is what i used when my daughter had a cough as a baby. sometimes its laying them down flat that causes phlegm to creep up and make them cough. however if its a dry cough it could be something in the air. If it persists take her along to your pharmacist for advice or failing that your docs. that's what they're there for ;)

Make an appointment to take your daughter to the doctor and let he/her tell you what it is and what needs to be done. Don't rely on the general public for advice on something like this.
