A novice is someone who is still in the process of learning the trade while an expert knows already everything about the trade.

The Novice is the guy who does the work.

The Expert is the one who hovers over him telling him what to do.

The one in the middle knows what to do and how to do it but dosen't get paid any better than the Novice. He's called an "Employee".

You could analogize to union trades where there is an apprentice (novice), journeyman, then master (expert).
