Pants is and American word for trousers! So very often when someone refers to pants they do not mean under wear, which yes boys wear pants and girls wear knickers!
So I am saying that when they refer to Pants they are meaning your trousers!

Knickers and panties are a bit old fashioned. In the UK, 'pants' just means undies for either gender.

In the UK pants are boys underwear, knickers are girls and various variations of names for both (thongs, boxers, undies, briefs etc.)
In the USA pants are normally what we call trousers.
That's my take anyway!
