In a nutshell because humans are generally self destructive with short memories. The overwhelming feeling of "that's not going to happen to me" pervades our society. Sticking ones head in the sand is a symptom of a people who are self centered, egotistical and lazy.
That said, we can change the way we are, one person at a time. Take personal responsibility for the consequences of your actions. Its as simple as that.

Violence and hate are a basic part of the human race and whenever people are facing difficulty in the world there will be hate and violence.
What causes this is of some debate.
Also people would rather blame others then themselves for their prediciment.
It is also argued that hate is connected to the difference of opinion and thus the world has about a 5% possibility of agreeing on everthing with out some dictatorship or mind control then hate will exist.

Well, for one thing Satan spends an enormous amount of effort to keep stirring up that hate. For another - many races have spent centuries fighting one another and it's in the blood(no pun intended). For another reason - change is the hardest thing there is for people to do. If they have no personal reason to make a big change then it's back to the convenience of their old (bad) habits.Don't get too overwhelmed and discouraged by all of this. There are still many many just plain good people in the world (believe it or not) It's the bad guys who get all of the publicity and drama.

Selfishness is in every person. It is a sin which untimately needs a spiritual cure which is to has a change in your inner nature by being a new creation thur Christ. With very little exception the majority of churches I have been a part of have people who love each other, care about their neighbor and help in their community in one way or another. I know that doesn't fit the Hollywood or news media portrayal that ministers are wacko and christians are Dr. Jeckel and Mr Hydes.

It's a human condition. Even if we were all transparent (no color) and had the same religion or beliefs we would had found a reason for hating and criticizing another human being and that's because we are not all born with the same mental capacities and even then... only God knows. Don't worry about it too much and keep yourself happy with the things you like to do.

There are a lot of people out there who believe that if the world ends in some great Armageddon, then their side will prevail, and they will be the ones to see heaven. That covers people from each of the big religions. It's not really a world peace point of view, is it?

I know what you mean! There seem to be a lot of people who are just plain vindictive and it saddens me to see religion and self-righteousness used to judge and even destroy others. I genuinely thought we had evolved past war until 9/11 and then our country's response by taking over Iraq. There are so many politics going on that I don't think the reasons for the decisions made by Heads of State are even clear to us anymore!

The kind of racism that you are referring to is almost always handed down from one generation to another. The hate that they have is so embedded into them that it has to have been imprinted from a very early age. If we are exposed to something like that daily then we accept it without question and perpetuate the mythos.
Also, we are surrounded by a world of stereotypes that are reinforced everytime we watch certain (badly written) movies and television shows. Entertainment has made massive in-roads in the last few years (with the exceptional work of Spike Lee, and the excellent movie "Crash") but as recently as the 1970s there were plenty of racial stereotypes being portrayed on our screens.
It feels like the world is improving as a whole but there are still plenty of racially-motivated groups left in this country whose only goal is to spread their putrid hate to the youth of America. And on that score, once those feelings are that far ingrained into kids as young as 7 years old they are very difficult to remove. It's almost a pointless pursuit to argue with them. They are taught that certain races are predominantly criminal in nature and that ultimately breeds a kind of fear that is capable of motivating someone to perpetrate quite unspeakable, or at the very least quite bizarre acts. Even if that fear doesn't result in negative action, it still serves as a means to pass the hate onto the next generation.
And so it goes...

Unfortunately, with our busy American lives, we simply forget. It is a sad truth, but it is not until something tragic happens, like 9/11 do we remember life. After a short while, we go back to saying mean things to our family, our boyfriends and girlfriends, we talk about people behind their backs. We forget to say I love you, I miss you, I need you. Then God reminds us again that life is not promised tomorrow. And of course after a short while we forget again.

Sad isn't it? You can try a person at a time, a gesture of kindness, a simple smile at a stranger. Some days it really gets to you...take out the movie "Pay it forward" every now and then ...watching it gives me some hope the majority of people out there are like-minded.
