It is a sleeping disorder called sleep apnea . It is one of the things nurses write down on charts when they check on patients during the night. When this is noted, the doctors may go on early morning rounds to watch their patients and time the intervals between breaths. They literally watch you sleep.
These problems are then referred to sleep disorder clinics, and there are various ways to help you deal with it
It is scary when newborns have this problem. The babies are put in the special care nurseries where they are monitored round the clock.
One of the things that parents of newborns are asked is to stop smoking around their infants. Smoke is a noxious substance and might hinder their babies ability to breath regularly

Sleep Apnea, easily diagnosed with a sleep study and easily treated with a CPAP machine worn during sleep.

I have it and have used the machine for 7 years. Leaving this condition undiagnosed and untreated causes undo stress on the heart and robs you of sleep.
