So how can the word "queer" just mean "strange, unusual or amiss" again and no longer have homsexual connotations?

Unfortunately people need to use language in a manner that is not the way the language was originally intended.Probably because many people have a hard time expressing their own hang-ups, hate, anger, confusion, paranoia, and phobias. So words like queer and f@g have become words that can relieve such emotions temporally by attempting to use such language to dismiss something that some people can't accepted or tolerate.

But this also reflects on the user of such language.Imagine calling a light bulb a butt.Would that make sense?Well if you were really mad at the light bulb and lost your ability for rational and intelligent language use perhaps you would call a light bulb a butt.

The word "queer" must not be used by heterosexuals at all. If a heterosexual uses the term "queer" under any circumstances, he or she becomes and is an automatic homophobe. The word "queer" was used as a derogatory term to offend and insult homosexual men and women, especially the homosexual men. The appropriate terms to be applied to homosexuals of both genders are "gay" (when used as a adjective only), gayperson, "gay guy", "lesbian", lesbian person", and "lesbianwoman". Use them accordingly.

Queer has been reclaimed as an ok term by some gays who use it to describe themselves. "Queer theory" is even a category of literary theory.

It would be hard to go back to the original meaning of queer . . . and it's not likely to happen.

See, I read that as "how can we GLBT people reclaim the word so that it's no longer a slur but an empowering self-title". With queer, it's straight people that started calling us that, so...deal with it.

We have to start using it that way again.

Gosh, I had such a queer day today. People were just acting queer. I only had two hours of sleep, so that could be why.

Not gonna happen, the definition has been changed and will remain thus for as long as we live.

It was claimed as an epithet against homosexuals, but later reclaimed as a power word by homosexuals. Now that it has entered that arena, ferget about it meaning anything else.

Once known as a derogatory term for homosexual, Queer was reclaimed by lesbian, gay, and bisexual activist in the 1980's as a proud name for themselves. Queer blurs both gender and sexual orientation and is regarded as more inclusive of difference than lesbian or gay.

LOL, it HAS been reclaimed, only not in the way that you suggest. Words and their meanings evolve. What people like you once used as a slur has now been reclaimed as not being seen in a permanently negative light. Get over it.

I think that queer should not be " reclaimed" Sodomy is unusal. Let the gays keep queer , but give the rainbow back to the antiracist movement.

Oh, just get over it.

You breeders misuse words all the time. Your kind have turned the word "Gay" into meaning "stupid" or "bad."

Don't give me "we need to reclaim" crap.
