The original Jaws. From a film making standpoint, it was brilliantly manipulative on all levels. It had unique camera moves that evoked an emotional response, the soundtrack (which was ruined when it changed from film to video) had interesting effects which created a lot of tension and it was edited in such a way that it set you up to be scared and then scared you before you expected it to happen, taking you totally by surprise. You had to see it in the movie theater, though, when all the original effects were still in place. Not only did I never swim in the ocean again after I saw it, but I was even afraid to get into my bath tub and when I would go to bed, I would jump into bed from as far away as I could because I was afraid the shark would come out from under the bed!

My second favorite movie was the Exorcist. The very first part of the movie which took place in Northern Iraq at an archeological dig was one of the creepiest scenes I have ever seen and I think it was the creepiest scene in the whole movie.

OK, I'm dating my self but one of the scariest movies I have seen is "House on Haunted Hill". And no not the special effects dominated 1999 movie.

It is the 1959 (no that's not a typo) original version starring Vincent Price. What made it scary was it was in B&W and the FX consisted of lightening, wind and a skeleton (with wires visable) so your imagination had to fill in the blanks. It was directed by the master horror director of the time; William Castle.

Mr. Price also starred in an equally scary or evern terriying movie was "The Tingler" also in B&W released in 1959.

The Stepford Wives (1975) really creepy, trippy ending, plus its really feminist. What I really love about this movie is that the evil force in it is human, rather than a monster, so its even more scary because it's more believeable (except for the robots...)
