GNP (gross national product) is larger

GDP is just the gross domestic product, a fraction of GNP

Wikipedia has an excellent article for laypersons available at ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNP ).

In short, GNP is the total value of final goods and services produced in a year by a country's nationals (including profits from capital held abroad); whereas GDP is the total value of final goods and services produced within a country's borders in a year.
