Historic novels are wonderful to expand your vocabulary. Also Gothic romance novels will have verbose vocabulary, might not be your cup of tea.
Studying idioms is great too, speaking of a cup of tea.

Start with the Three Musketeers by Hugo Victor. You'll need a dictionary to help you understand it. Avoid Wuthering Heights, it was like trying to swim in a river upstream. Treasure Island is good fun, and so is Huckleberry Finn. I've just finished the Hunchback of Norte-Dame. This is a good story, but I found the detailed discussion on the architecture and landscape a bit boring, so I ended up skipping bits. It's a good story, but it is a tragedy, so it doesn't have a happy ending.

Depends on what your taste's are. I enjoy reading the spiritual "Chicken Soup For The Soul" books. 2 of my favorite authors are Stephen King and John Saul.
