I usually pick clothes which if find nice, but not necessarily fits me or comfortable.

i pick something that fits (i wear a small) and something thats not too extreme/flashy.

first find out what shape you are. example a pear shape, etc.. and then find clothes that flatter you.. if you have a small bust you may want to have a top thats busy on top that or has certain shapes etc.. and if your big you might want to minimize the top part. same with bottoms you know what your assets are and you know what isn't so great.
some people can were a a line cut skirt others look better with flairs again depending on shape and size.
you can look on the internet or even the library for books that will give you pictures so you can get the idea for yourself.
Just remember if it doesn't look right when you look in the mirror don't buy it jjust cause its on sale it will sit in your closet . you have to feel comfortable in it sometimes however things will be very sexy and you may not always be comfortable at first like a pair of shoes they can kill you but hey you look great in them with that dress. so sometimes you take a little pain on the toes but you look nice from head to toes than wearing a nice pair of sneakers hehe

It's all about the fit, the better the fit the more comfortable you'll be. If you have a long torso than you are in luck, since longer shirts are in style right now and easily found. Make sure your pants are of the proper length and just be confident.
