the wastegate is a dump valve. it keeps boost at a preset level. flutter occurs when the valve opens & closes rapidly, heard from the exhaust

The annoying wastegate flutter that many people experience, especially with aftermarket downpipes, is caused by the wastegate opening slightly at part throttle boost (0-7psi). With an aftermarket downpipe, there is much less backpressure helping to keep the wastegate closed, and so the flutter becomes signficantly louder.

The solution is to adjust the wastegate actuator arm slightly, effectively putting a very slight pre-load on the wastegate spring to help keep it closed at part throttle boost. This procedure will not eliminate the flutter completely, but it will come very close.


First take off your turbo heat sheild (there are 4 or 5 bolts holding it on. Next you will need to pop off the C-clip pictured. Disconnect the wastegate arm from the wastegate, and unscrew the lock nut. Then shorten the arm 2-3 turns, re-assemble everything and go for a drive.

The key here is the number of turns. You want the arm to have only a very slight pre-load when you attatch it back to the wastegate, which is in the closed position. If you turn it too much, you will experience boost spiking especially at part throttle. If this happens, back it off 1-1.5 turns and you should be good to go.

Clarification:
This fix is referring to wastegate flutter only. This is experienced while at partial throttle and anywhere from 0-7psi of boost. It sounds like a quick ticking sound and is sometimes mistaken for detonation. This is NOT referring to flutter caused by aftermarket BOV's and compressor surge in between shifts.

You're probably experiencing wastegate chatter. Different wastegates give off difference sounds at different volumes. There should be no reason to adjust anything on your BOV. It is designed to realease pressure over all. I would suggest visiting your local tuner and having them help you out. If it is a big deal, I'd get a re-routed discharge line that connects to your intake. Less noise, and you can get a valve that realeases low boost levels easier. It won't sound "cool" but recirculated discharge gas is more efficient than a BOV and actually allows for less loss in boost between gear change. If you had compressor surge, it would be very loud and evident. Compressor surge sounds like a raspy turkey gobble that lasts noticeably longer than any BOV discharge. Hope this helped.

Engines with Turbos have what is called a waste gate. Basicly what a waste gate is: A valve ("Gate") that lets the extra preasure out ("WASTE") of the system= (Intake manifold). Your turbo cam make a lot more PSI than whats its pushing into the Manifold. Its probably pushing about 5 PSI into the manifold. The more PSI the more Horse Power! But if the Turbo puts too much PSI into the Manifold BAD THINGS START TO HAPPEN! Like blowing up the engine! (So dont mess with the WASTE GATE! Back to the waste gate. It will let out the extra PSI (WASTE) out, It will make a FLUTTERING noise, that sounds like an exhaust leak. Because thats exactly what it is! Understand?
