Some cottons are "mercerized" or preshrunk. If that's the case here, there may not be much shrinkage if you do the hot water wash. The thing about the hot water wash is: there's no way to control how much shrinkage there will be. It could be a lot or it could be a little. Also, clothing tends to shrink all over, not just in length but also in width. If it shrinks, it could shrink down a whole size and be tighter in the shoulders and shorter in the arms, as well as being shorter at the bottom hem. I'd say just live with the minor annoyance of being a little too long, and when you do wash it, wash it in cold water and hang it to dry. That's what I would do.

100% cotton.. Hmm. That's easy! Wash it alone (unless you want to shrink your other clothes too) on the hottest tempature setting on your washing machine. Then directly after its done being washed toss it into the dryer on the highest heat setting you have.

It probably won't shrink too much.

I would suggest to take the shirt back to the store and get a smaller size. Either that or have somebody just hem up the bottom for you... Its probably going to be your best choice instead of trying to shrink the entire shirt.

100% cotton will shrink if you wash in hot water and dry in a dryer.

simple.. wash it hot water and dry it on the hottest setting. If that don't work, tell us who makes the magical non-shrinking flannel shirt.

Exactly what material is it made of? You could try washing it a few times in really hot water, but that may or may not work, given the types of fibers used in today's clothing.
