You have to shut the gas supply off first. If it comes in off mains get a licensed engineer. If it is off a bottle, turn the pressure off at the supply bottle. Bleed off any pressure in the line by turning it on at the fireplace.

I could think of better things to look at..
Why do you want to look at a back boiler? they are not pretty.
If it is to have the gas fire removed, and the re-installation of a coal fire with back boiler , forget it. You are probably smokeless anyway. If you need in there for some reason, mail me.

No, they're not designed for ease or removal. Chances are, if you took it out, without the correct termination on the gas line, you'd have gas leaking into your house. Not good!

Not exactly easy. Also, you need to be Corgi trained and registered to disconnect any gas appliance connected to mains gas. High risk of blowing yourself up!

If i were you, I'd get a gas engineer round. I used to have one and a full service only cost me £50.
