To start off, I have a DirecTV receiver with Tivo built in. It's not one of the newer dvr's, it's the old one that actually uses the phone line to get scheduling instead of the satellite, which is what the current dvr's do.

Here's my scenario and question: My dad and I are both college football nuts and our team is playing Thursday night. He is heading off on a weekend vacation to the beach and won't be able to watch the game. When he comes back home, can I take my receiver to his house and hook it up to his tv so he can watch the game on my tivo receiver. He does have directv, as well, if that matters. In my head, I'm thinking I should be able just to connect my receiver straight into his tv and watch the game, but the only problem would be my receiver is going to reset and reboot. Is this going to cause any problems with his current service?

If you have recorded the game on your TiVo hard drive, you can play it anywhere, You don't need to be connected to DirecTV or anything else. When the TiVo powers up at the new location, just bypass the part where it is searching for a satellite signal and you can go to the "Now Playing" menu. I have done this many times, taking my TiVo to friend's house and even to TV stores to test TVs with ny recorded programs.
