I've taken a job in a language school overseas, the school teaches young children (5-12). The boss wants me to treat the children softly, making them happy. But my attitude has always been to discipline them harshly (no, I don't hit or spank). The boss says that her business is based on children having fun whiloe learning English. But I feel uncomfortable doing things like songs and games because I feel that my dignity is more important. I've always believed in showing children discipline, but she says that I'm too strict and boring. I'm worried about getting fired. How do I go from being the disciplinarian to being more freindly.

try to remeber the dayz wen u ur self were a kid! bring the inner child out of you! but that doesnt necessarily mean to be "undignified", it just makes you a more down to earth type of person and trust me parents like a teacher that's "one with the kids" yet has discipline so try something new and go for the kid side of you, who knows u might have some fun too!

Remember children do not know everything, and they are looking to you for leadership and education. Although discipline has its place, harsh discipline is not a good teacher with the very young. Perhaps you need to discipline yourself to learn your boss's gentler methods. Children adore learning when it is paired with fun.
You are teaching others. Your dignity and comfort are far less important than doing your job in the manner your boss has found to be successful.

I feel the same way you do over discipline in class; for me it is very important because I think that without it the process doesn't work as well as it could. However I love to play games with my students - 8 and 9 years old- ; I do understand your point of view on what your dignity refers, but let me tell you that you don't have to compromise your dignity or act against your personality in class. One thing you should know is that having fun in class does not depend in you, but in your students; you just need to give them the opportunity to have fun by playing games which can always be adapted to the topic you are teaching. I always start my classes asking my students if they want to play a game, they always say "yes" and even though the game deals with classroom content and sometimes is very quick they feel it is something different. When it comes to discipline my advice is to be a little bit relaxed when you are getting to know your students, as time goes by they will start to understand what your rules are and eventually they will be able to follow them. Always remember that you should try as hard as you can not to embarass a student in front of the class, call them out when you need to point something out and do it when you have had a time to cool off. If you need help with ideas for games in the classroom send me your e-mail and I will gladly send you a document with lots of activities you can use.

I believe in quick , but not strong discipline in the classroom. You can still be a good disciplinarian just do it quickly after the offense with care. Use of the words we and our are necessary. Let the child know that the behavior is distracting to (our) learning process'. Good Luck Paul

Just tell your boss they need to know you're in charge before you can be their friends.

That will buy you some time.

Loosten up a little... I'm sure you'll be just fine.

are you okay?
I feel dread for your own kids.
were you raised with such harsh discipline? If so then it may not be easy. Think like this:
you want to put a SMILE on their face AND get them to LEARN.
think that and it should help.
