Thavam is a Tamil word meaning penance.When used with another word it becomes ,"Thava".
e.g. Thavaputhalvan.It means a son got by penance.

It sounds like the word "tava" we have in Turkish. We call pans tava, and also we have special pans. We call the food we cook in that special pan "tava" too. So, it's both the name of the pan and the food you cook in it.
