I have been dancing for 20 years and am lucky to have only suffered one serious injury. However, I am currently having some hip issues.

I used to "cheat" my turnout when I was younger because I have very flexible ankles and double-jointed knees, so it looked like I was turned out but I wasn't really. I know... I was stupid kid. My one regret.

As I got older, I tried to improve my turnout but it's harder when your older and although I have been working steadily on it for years I feel like in the past 5 or so has been when I've gotten it right.

About a month ago, my right hip started to bother me a little. It was a bit "creaky".I have been icing it and using a ball to work it out, and it felt a little better for a while... just stiff. It got really bad recently, so bad I can barely walk after classes.

I'm going to the orthopedist next Thursday (1st appt. they had!) but I wanted to see if anyone else has had trouble with their hips and see what you thought I could do until Thursday.

Welcome to the world of the aging dancer....LOL If it is not our hips, it is our knees, back and/or feet.

One word of advise - aquatics. Between my knees, hips and feet I was a wreck a few years ago. I turned to aquatics - actually closed my dance school and now teach water aerobics and do water therapy. It saved my life. I was in constant pain before and rarely in pain at all now. Water is a great way to allow the body to repair and strengthen....helped me tons more than regular rehab. work! I also take combination Glucosamine, Chondroitin & MSM pill as well as CherryFlex. I had been on Bextra, but since I began the CherryFlex I was able to drop the Bextra.

Just an aside - if you end up needing hip replacement eventually I can tell you that the rehab and recovery from it is easier than knees, etc. My hip patients return quickly to classes. (It helps if they attend my aquatic classes religiously for months before the surgery to get as strong as they can before surgery).

For more information on CherryFlex go to Cherryflex.com.

Other form of exercise might help. I was worried I'm starting to have problems with my knees which is not unheard of for Latin dancers. However, it just so happened that I had to briskly walk a lot lately - probably, 5 times vs my usual. The problem with knees have magically disappeared.

Hip issues are sometimes related to the posture when sitting. It is totally unexpected angle, but if you sit a lot your hips might get affected.

i have hip problems and my hips pop out of their sockets (a bit of a problem for dancing) and i can't lean or sit into my hip, or if i want to, i have to be very careful. sometimes they tighten up and i have to crack my hips like most people crack their knuckles and it drives me crazy. my hips are "creaky" as you call it and i've had numerous x-rays and MRIs for my hips, but there's nothing scientifically wrong so i have no "cure" or way to fix my hip problems. my doctor did tell me that (at 15 years old) i may have to get hip replacement surgery and stop dancing (which is my life)
i hope you have better luck than me

you may be getting arthritis in your hip, but I am glad that you are going to the doctor. This can happen even at a young age.
