How do I talk them out of the activation fee? Is it even possible, or are some activation fees required?

Just tell them that there is another gym that would appreciate your business that is more affordable and just as good. They will eitehr tell you to go there or they may do it. Who knows, its worth the shot. However some really nice churches have a rec center that you cna get a membership really cheap at.

tell them you will not get the membership if they do not waive the activation fee.

Maybe you should ask the gym. I mean how would we know? Anything is possible I guess. But really you would need to ask them. All gyms have their own rules and some will give you breaks on certain things. Just ask them. Negotiate. Tell them you will join some other gym.
