Well, first of all, your dad will not be able to see your IMs if you've logged out of your messenger; because they'll become offline messages which will open only when you log on.
However, when you download the Messenger, it'll be there for all to see.
Now, I'm guessing that his comp has XP and there's the provision in XP to log on as different users. Go to "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel", "User Accounts".
Now, when you open "User Accounts", check to see if your dad has made himself the Administrator. Usually, the owner of the comp is assigned the Administrative rights. Create a new account for yourself by clicking on "Create an account". Having done this, click on "Change the way in which users log on and off" and click on apply when you're done.
Now, You'll have the "Password Protected" remark against your account. This means that only you can see your settings and preferences when you log in with your password; your dad can't.
I guess this will solve the issue.
All the best.
Cheers

If you do not have Windows XP completely ignore the below, as I cannot help you.
The best choice would be, if you are a computer jock like me, to set up your own account on his computer. To do this, START > Control Panal > User Accounts > Create a New Account. Make sure you mark yourself as a computer admin. You will be brought back to the User Accounts window. Click the new account icon. Select "Create a password."
Windows should ask you if you wish to make your account private. Say yes. If it doesn't... well... um. ****, I don't know what to do then. To I smell a follow-up question? =P

All you can really do is install it to a non-default directory, and delete all shortcuts related to it after installation. It would mean that to start it, you would have to navigate to the installation directory and click the .exe directly. Also, make sure the messenger is NOT set to automatically start with Windows.

dont not create shortcuts in your desktop. try to open it manually in program files. make sure if you are using instant messenger, do not remember password and sign in as offline to that specific person like your dads account.
