Do not tie!!! One way to teach a horse that is hard to get to stand on three legs is to take a soft lead rope double it up so that you are holding both ends, drop it down around the leg, rub the rope up and down the leg until the horse does not react violently, then use the loop at the end of the rope to lift the foot up, hold the foot up until the horse starts to protest, then put the foot down. Continue to lengthen the time of this exercise until you can hold any of your horses legs up for as long as you want to. Use this exercise to help teach your horse to stand while you pick feet, stand for the farrier, and in an emergency horses that been taught this will often times not struggle like most horses.

I would not recommend tieing your horses leg up so that you can train him to stand on three legs. your horse has 4 legs so that he can stand on 4 legs. If you tie up his leg there is a possibility that it can get twisted or caught and then that could give him a fracture and then you are reallly screwed. Simply dont do it. It wont feel good to the horse and it could cause a lot of other problems. your horse needs all three of its legs to balance its weight. Just like how we would have a hard time if we tied our leg up to try and train ourselves to stand on one leg....youd fall over. just dont do it.

Be carefull with your actions. I personally don't think it is a good idea in case he does hurt himself really bad. You could easily brake his leg or do even worse.
Maybe you should think about it a different way!!! Would you like being tied up like that??
You could maybe ask more knowledgeable horse people like horse vets, or farriers on other solutions for your problem..

I see your piont but I do agree with grommit...What the hell is wrong with you? Yes, there are a lot of things that scare a horse that you can teach them NOT to be afraid of, but dont tie his leg up for heavens sake! Your going to freak him out for life if you do.

Sounds like cruelty to me! I don't think you'd like it too well if someone did something similiar to you.

Bad idea, don't do it unless you want to face the consequences of being brought up on animal cruelty charges.

Why would you want to do that, it would cause more leg, balance back etc problems..

Why would you want to do that to your horse? It's equivalent to animal abuse isn't it.
