For example, what is the reason for withholding merchandise that people are ready to buy because of some pre-determined release date? Better yet, what would be the reason for one game on one platform (e.g. PS2) to be released for sale, but the same game on another platform (e.g. XBox) not be released even though stores have it in their possession? This has always seemed retarded to me.

They have a contract.If they break it, they can be sued.

I think it might have something to do with being able to sell the product at the same time as every other store. It would be a huge advantage to be able to sell a popular item before other stores have received it. I'm sure there are other reasons.

something called the fair trade laws. allows there to be a level playing field on which stores can sell "time-sensitive" merchandise
