(Regarding the private plane crashing into a NYC apartment building today...)

Can any private pilot with a plane just cruise around NYC sightseeing? Isn't this restricted airspace or something?

No.. The entire city of New York is not restricted airspace. And yes, people can "just cruise around NYC sightseeing." You have to file a flight plan but it's not very restrictive.

It's not all restricted . After todays' plane crash they discussed why the unrestricted airspace near the Hudson , could pose security problems because they do not follow a flight plan in unrestricted areas . . Apparently nobody in NY thought of that one until today .

He took off 12 minutes before the accident.
Flying over Manhattan has a limit of about 1000 ft I believe.
When someone is having trouble with his airplane, the pilot is more interested in getting the aircraft back up than worrying about where he is.
Something happened (fuel problem) and gravity took over.
Unfortunately the problem was severe and apparently sudden.
Gravity always wins.

No, they can not just fly their plane around New York City.
It was said on the new that that plane was not detected on
the radar, due to being to low. They have the no fly zone. I live
in fresno,CA and I was watching it on the internet, for a good 35 minutes.

I don't know but the pilot was not sightseeing. He was taking flying lessons and apparently, there was a problem with fuel.

It flew into a building near East River and aviation traffic on the rivers is pretty intense.

HELLOOO...he flew his plane into a BUILDING!
Thats like asking if anyone can just drive their cars in people's yards when they crash into a house.
OBVIOUSLY something more was going on than just bad flying.
Don't expect the media to give you the real details tho.
