Both sports were being played in the 1860's but the NFL began in 1920.College football was first played in 1869 between Princeton and Rutgers. Hope this is what you were looking for.

Football's earliest origins (with anything resembling modern rules) can be traced back to 1869 starting with an intercollegiate game being played between Princeton and Rutgers. Rutgers won 6-4. Baseball can be traced back (with anything resembling modern rules of course) to the 1840's when the Cincinnati Red Stockings were formed.
