*Nothing that we really need but we can not make them cheap enough for the average consumer to buy them.*

We have a big country with lots of natural resources. I don't think there's anything we can't get or make ourselves.

The issue is what is more cost effective to import vs. make ourselves.

Maybe there's some stuff that we can't make enough of, but again, if consumers paid enough, we could probably produce enough to satisfy all our needs. Oil comes to mind. If the price goes high enough, and the political roadblocks are removed, we could probably produce all the oil we need ourselves.

Most of them are chemical elements, such as aluminum and tungsten, which are not found in quantity in the US. The US also imports certain precision instruments that are made by companies abroad but not in the US. However, actual US imports are much broader than that; many countries make products that could be made in the US, but are cheaper to make abroad. Tools are a good example; my favorite vendor of tools sells stuff which is mostly made in China.

We have shifted our economy to minimize the amount of manufacturing going on in this country. Instead, we produce food, entertainment and harvest some natural resources to trade for manufactured goods.

There is nothing we don't have the technology to make within our country, it is just the economic costs that prohibit it.

Not much comes to mind.
Some minerals like chromium are not mined here.
We are fortunate to be pretty self sufficient, thank God.
Some products we elect to import for economic reasons, not because they can't be produced here.

Manufactured goods...........nothing
Naturally occurring............lots of things
the issue is that it costs us so much to make it here that the competitive edge is lost.People will always buy the cheaper product.Every redneck shops at walmart but he is the first to complain about foreign imports.

Iboga. It only grows in certain pars of Africa. I suppose we could grow it here in a controlled environment, but it is illegal so we better not.

Hm, my first thought was diamonds... but I'd be wrong. We now have the technology to make them.

Um... how about... tropical hardwoods?

Soccor balls made from SLAVE LABOR. Slave labor is the only difference between what we make and what we import.
