No, second last step wrong.

-24 = 24k
=> k = -1

You can also check the answer by substituting it in the original question. As you can see
If k = 1

L.H.S = -18 - 6 = - 24
R.H.S = 6(1 + 3) = 6 * 4 = 24

L.H.S not equal to R.H.S

Hence k = 1 is wrong, you can try similarly using - 1 and you will see that L.H.S = R.H.S

Close. After you add 6k to both sides, you should have

0 = 24 + 24k, not

24 = 24k. You should subtract 24 from both sides to get

-24 = 24k, then you can divide by 24. So you end up with

k = -1.

You were doing fine, using the mathematical way to add or subtract the same amount to both the left and right sides of the equations. What happened in the 2nd last step? What made you deviate from the right way of doing things?

Following your style, after adding 6k to both sides, you should have
0 = 24 + 24k

Why didn't you write the above? Or did you but you chose to jump step? Or you find it awkward to write a zero on one side? Or since 0 is usually invisible as in we don't write 0 + x but just x, so the above equation might become ' = 24 + 24k ' ?? Thus, deviating from the proper track and activated the non-mathematical pattern-based method of 'throwing/bring over' a term across the equal signs, and made the very common mistake of forgetting the change of signs.

Hmmm... I don't know the reasons, but I strongly encourage you to ask yourself to find out the reason so that you might re-program yourself to avoid such erros.

Nope...
.. 0 =. 24 + 24k
-24 = -24
-24 = 24k
k = -1
