Why is a rainbow flag or triangle a simbol for the gay community?

What is the history behind these two shapes and their association with the gay community. Does anyone know?

Well, I did some searching on the color aspect, but I didn't find anything that points at Rainbow or Triangle. I did find this though, take a look.....

Who cares. Gays are gays, don't get involved if you are straight.

Maybe it's supposed to represent diversity; I dunno.
