Sometimes my baby latches right on and other times it can take him up to five minutes to get it right. Does anybody have a baby who really tries to latch on but just can't seem to get it right and it takes them a couple of minutes???- and is that normal?

And also do babies always burp after eating. I am afraid b/c my baby doesn't always burp and sometimes ends up spitting up a little or throwing up his meal! I am afraid to leave alone b/c I think he might choke on it.

He's less than 2 weeks old. He is just learning this breastfeeding thing. Yes, it can be normal for it to take a few trys to get latched on properly. If you are worried, try seeing a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) or a La Leche League Leader. A LLL Leader will help you for free and might come to your home for such a young baby.

No, breastfed babies don't always need to be burped. Especially if you feed them before they start crying. Breastfed babies don't swallow air while eating like formula fed babies, unless there is something wrong with their latch.

It's hard to breastfeed at first. He is probably still trying to get it right! Practice is the best solution. Make sure you are in a comfortable position and that the baby is too. Also if you are big breasted then make sure that he can breathe easily. Don't put too much stress it comes naturally. Try another side after every 15 minutes to keep a balance. Good luck.

Very young babies may still have problems in latching on but practise makes perfect.

You may need to burp your baby in this case after every feed though theoretically direct breastfeeding should not lead to excessive intake of air compared to bottle feed.

does he seem to favor one side over the other?my babies did! Do you know the trick of lightly kinda tickling off the corner of the mouth with your finger or nipple this incites the urge to suckle. At 11 days he is just learning too! This seemed to keep the baby interested and driven to get it right. The football hold with the baby seemed also to be easier on the side they didnt favor, maybe I held him differently on that side. Who knows just please keep trying a little longer you guys will get it.
