I would probably ask him nicely to move on. I may not own the sidewalk but when it snows, I'm responsible for shovelling it and would be sued if someone fell so...

Would you answer differently if someone opened your window from the sidewalk a few months before? While you were right there?

Sort of playing devil's advocate. Interesting to see other people's responses. (That did happen and there is someone out front right now and I may ask him to move along but curious about how others would handle a situation like that.)

I can see where having an attempted break-in would cause you to be leery of the people outside your home. Nothing like being violated to sour you on human nature. You must keep in mind that 99% of people are really OK, it's the 1% who give the rest a bad name.
If it was me I'd and I was getting weirded out by this guy standing there I'd let him know I knew he was there. Open the window and talk to him. Don't be confrontational, just ask him if he knew what the correct time is or something simple and non threatening. If he is a criminal scoping the place out he will realize that the place is occupied, and that he has been seen and spoken to (he is no longer protected by anonymity) and he will be scared off and leave. This, of course, works in my neighborhood, but may not work in situations where drugs, guns and gang initiations are prevalent, so use your own judgment.

Call 911 or the police/sheriff if there is someone just hanging around out front. Yes, been there myself -- person hid behind heavy drapes while I went out on the patio. Fortunately, I was not hurt, but they tore out the dealybobby thingies that you put into the wall to hold the bolts to hang the curtain rod -- it takes alot to pull those out -- when they left in such a hurry. Eerie feeling. And there was someone here when I was not. Yeah, I got more locks . . .

Ok , I dont think this guy would be homeless if he had the caliones to break in to people homes . Secondly , I think he may just look out for anyone who would try to break in if you show him some courtesy . Why dont you give the poor guy a blanket....he may be an angel in disguise ;)

To tell you the truth I don't know exactly what I would do . But I know myself enough to know that if the man were truly homeless and threatless that I would do something helpful. If it happens to me, I will know what to do. Until then, I can't be totally sure.
