forget about a rebuild. you can buy a nice f150 for what you're gonna pay to have your transmission rebuilt by a professional shop. if you already have to rebuild the tranny the rest of the truck can't be far behind.

if it was up to me, i'd spend the money on an 80's model. the 70's models and before have really taken on a collector status and the 80's share much of the same appealing design concepts but are still under appreciated by buyers. i'd pick up one of these gems before they're all gone.

but if you really want to keep the truck just shop around call the scrap yards and ask them how much they want for a transmission. should be able to find a 5-speed to fit from 200-300, an AOD for 500. rebuilt 5-speeds are common too. if you want to use your own qualified mechanic you should have no problem getting a 3-month warranty from the junkyard. some of these places install them too. will give you a 3-month warranty on a used tranny which is their word they're not selling you something they know is a piece of crap

but consider that you can get a very nice truck for the price of a rebuilt transmission

Just put 3 quarts of tranny fluid in it for about $10. You know, 99% of a tranny's problems are just low fluid, although the shop will tell you different of course. They want to charge you $1500 to put $10 of fluid in it.
