Armour was also commonly used to protect war animals, such as war horses and elephants. Armour for war horses was called barding. Armour has also been produced for hunting dogs that hunt dangerous game, such as boars.

Horse armor:
A croupiere (also crupiere bacul or crupper) was a component of Medieval and Renaissance barding armor. The croupiere protected the horse's hind quarters. It could be made from any combination of leather, chain, or plate.

A criniere (also known as manefaire or crinet) was a component of Medieval and Renaissance barding armor. The criniere was a set of segmented plates that protected the horse's neck.

A champron (also spelled chanfron, chamfrein, and shaffron) is a medieval armor piece designed to protect a horse's face. Sometimes this included hinged cheek plates. A decorative feature common to many champrons is a rondel with a small spike.

Hope this is of some help.

First thing that comes to mind is horses, because if the horse died, the rider often died also. Elephants too, for the same reason.
