The Vancouver Canucks had been a long running team in the old WHL. In 1970, the NHL granted the city of Vancovuer an expansion team and the new Canucks were born. The team has made it to the Cup finals twice but have come away empty handed.

The Vancouver Canucks were established in 1945 in the Pacific Coast Hockey League. In 1970 they joined the NHL. The Canucks missed the playoffs 8 years in the first 10 years. In 1982 they made a long playoff run and reached the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in franchise history, only to be swept by the New York Islanders. In the 1900s, they hired coach Pat Quinn and acquired young stars such as Pavel Bure, Trevor Linden and Kirk McLean. In 1994, the Canucks made another run to the Cup finals. However they lost again in seven games to the Mark Messier-led New York Rangers. After the 1994 playoffs the Canucks have failed to advance past the second round. Since their run they have acquired Markus Naslund, their current captain. Last season, the Canucks finished 9th in the Western Conference. During the off-season the Canucks traded struggling star Todd Bertuzzi for Roberto Luongo to bolster their goaltending which most people consider as the Canucks' weakest area. This year the Canucks are looking to get back into the playoffs and hopefully advance past the second round.
