AUSTRALIA has resigned from OFC (Oceania Football Confederations) & joined AFC (Asian Football Confederations) back in January 2006. all Asian teams including AUSTRALIA are eligible to play in the continential championship such as AFC Asian Cup.
AFC has since included AUSTRALIA as the competing teams in the 2007 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers just before the draw for the qualifying group. they have been drawn in the relatively easy group which contains BAHRAIN, KUWAIT & LEBANON.
LEBANON have since withdrawn leaving only 3 teams in the group which AUSTRALIA have secured the place in the 2007 AFC Asian Cup finals with ease with victory over KUWAIT & BAHRAIN at home. .

Australia plays in the Asian cup because theres is no competetion in that region in the world so Fifa decided to put them in a more competetive tournaments.Thats Why.
