Yes java is needed to play yahoo games.you can find out if you have it.and do what i did, this works better for games.
You need java for games, but not to open them,if you have microsoft VM. go to start button, settings,, control panel open internet options advance tab, scroll down to see if microsoft vm is there if so unclick the 2 java listed. Make sure JIT is checked, click apply then ok. close.this lets msn vm launch games. this will SPEED UP game loading time.if you don’t have msn VM,get it here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/ virtualserver/default.mspx

The Majority of the games on Yahoo! do use Java, but most browsers do not include Java with them.

You can pick up Java Runtime Environment (JRE for short) at http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp OR at https://sdlc6c.sun.com/ECom/EComActionServlet;jsessionid=28AD7D79D730FC5FBFD12D4C6775E2D6

JRE is also used with other software (like Open Office) in addition to all browsers, so it's highly suggested to pick this up over the installing Microsoft Virtual Machine (which only works with IE).
