So how did Ross and Rachel get together in the first place??!

Ross went to China and while he was there, Rachel had her birthday and Ross left her a present which was an expensive pin/brooch she saw awhile ago. She was surprised that he remembered and got her something so expensive and then Chandler says that it's not surprising because when Ross fell for Carol (his first wife, now ex-wife) he got her something expensive too and then Rachel first realized that Ross liked her.
So, days/weeks later, she waits for Ross at the airport with flowers because she had feelings for him. He comes off the plane with Julie, an old acquaintance, and they're now dating which bums Rachel out.
Rachel goes out on a date with some other guy to try to get over Ross. She drunk dials him and leaves a message about how she's over him. He listens to it later on while she's with him and he asks her about it. Then, he gets upset because he has to choose between her and Julie but he ultimately chooses Rachel.

Ross knew Rachel from Monica in thier high school years... the first time they hinted Ross liked Rachel was when Rachel was stood up for prom and Ross was going to go with her then Rachel's bf showed up and I think the answerer before me knows the rest :)

In the very first episode Rachel showed up at Monica's apartment after leaving her fiancee at the alter. Ross was there and his high school crush on her was reignited. The finale of the show was pretty much set up by the first episode. As Phoebe once said of Ross and Rachel, "He is her oyster".
