WOW!!!!! I really cant believe some of the advise you are getting on here. Not sure if mine will be any better, but first of all I think that you know not to get a switch and hit her legs like one person said.Putting hotsause,vinager,etc..... on her fingers is not a good thing either. If she rubs her eyes or even when she uses the bathroom and wipes and touches down there it is gonna burn her eyes or down there something terrible and there is no reason for that at all.My friends lilttle boy had his thumb in his mouth 24/7.When he was playing, watching tv,looking at a book and yes, even while eating that thumb was in his mouth. He would get a bite of food then chew and swollow and the thumb would go back in his mouth till his next bite.I would play around with him and say Austin whats in your mouth. He would take his thumb out and say nothing. With him being at my house alot because he was my neighbor I just kept asking him till he stopped sucking his thumb.

I wouldn't worry about it. She'll stop, and if she doesn't its her fingers and her teeth (even if there were any potential that the teeth would be pushed forward).

As a former thumb-sucker I can tell you that when my father would remind me by saying in a sing-songy voice, "T-h-u-m-b", every time he noticed the thumb-sucking, it made me wonder what on Earth his problem was (not in those words when I was three). I remember thinking, "I'm a good girl. I'm a nice girl. I'm nice to animals. Why is he bothering me about this like I'm doing something wrong."

A child as little as three can be capable of thinking, "They're my fingers. Its my mouth. I'm not hurting anyone."

You are better off risking a slight pushing out of her teeth (which may or may not happen) than risking her feeling as if she's being harrassed over something she doesn't see as being such a bad thing). And - in the scheme of life and all the adults who do things they shouldn't do, like do rotten things to their children or smoke or drink too much or eat too much etc. - the reality is your little girl isn't doing anything too bad at all.

My 5 year old sucked her thumb until a few weeks ago ,
We started a reward program , and gave her gloves to sleep in .
Bad tasting things don't work that well .If a child really wants to suck there thumb they will spit out the bad taste .
Be patient .

But be aware , My childs doc said that damege before the age 5 is not permanent but anthing after will need to be fixed with braces . Good luck....

Talk to her pediatrician about this. Ignore some of the other rude comments on here! Kids all go through various phases and it will be fine. But if her fingers are misshapened then I would seriously talk to a doc about it! Good Luck!

shes will be fine and so will her teeth. i have 6 girls and I've learned to pick my worries. id let this one go.......i read some of the other answers.you have to remember sucking in this case fingers will not change the shape of the mouth.all the first set of teeth fall out any ways. that starts around 4 and last til around your teens.I'm sure this child will have grown out of this habit long before that.

my daughter since she was born has been sucking those two fingers when shes tired, shes almost 19 months old, nothing wrong with her teeth. sucking fingers and thumbs has nothing to do with her teeth mishaping, teeth is genetic like everything else,

The 1st response is incorrect, sucking your thumb can cause your teeth to protrude. As for stopping her, I'd say redirect her to another activity, drawing, painting, playing mommy to her dolls, etc... Also if she is constantly being told to stop, this may have an opposite affect, try to ignore it, she'll stop on her own.

Sucking your thumb or fingers can do damage to your mouth and teeth.
She could end up having bucked teeth as a result of the finger sucking.
You can buy a type of clear nail polish that tastes horrible and put it on her. It helped me to stop biting my nails.

Buy some of that nialpolish that tastes aweful. They make it for kids with this issue. She won't get hurt or anything. After a while she will learn that fingers in her mouth taste bad! Give it a try.
