14 = - (p - 8)

▪ Step 1
' - ' mean ' - 1 '
14 = - (p - 8)
14 = ( -1 * p ) + ( -1 * -8 )
14 = -p + 8

▪ Step 2
14 - 8 = -p
OR
-p = 14 - 8
- p = 4

▪ Step 3
multiply by ' - 1 '
( - 1 * -p ) = ( -1 * 4 )
p = -4

=> p - 8 = -14
=> p = -6

Is this a graphing problem or just a normal equation?

If it is just an equation:
14 = -(p-8)
-14 = p - 8
p = -6
