I have a cold and I'm toughing it out for now but if there's something I can take I'd like to I think. My baby is only a week old so I don't want to take anything which could have the slightest effect on him, as I think he's catching it as well (keeping a good eye on him though!) Anyone know what's acceptable to take- can I have cough drops?

In answer: I've had the cold for over a week now. He was born wed 10/4 and it started that day. I had pink eye while in delivery- or so they thought. I had to have antibiotics during delivery because my water had been broken/breaking for three days and they said that those would clear up any nfection in my lungs and whatnot; but they apparantly were wrong.

Oh I'm sorry dear. How long have you had a cold? I recommend you NOT drink too much orange juice, if at all, because citrus (passed through your breastmilk) could be upsetting to your baby's tummy. You can get the vitamin C elsewhere, from supplements for example.

Instead...drink lots of water and get plenty of rest. Your lack of sleep these early days of your baby's life is not doing much for your immune system so get some zzz's!

Continue to breastfeed as it is the best nutrition for your baby, even when you have a cold.

For more info on cold medications that are compatible with breastfeeding, here's a good website: http://www.kellymom.com/health/meds/cold-remedy.html#natural

In the future, if you feel a cold coming on, I recommend taking Airborne (a vitamin supplement) or similar. I've done that a few times and have shortened the duration of my colds significantly. Hope you feel better soon!

I feel for you! I was soooo sick with a terrible cold last winter when I was pregnant! I thought I was going to die! It actually helped me quit smoking b/c I would cough so violently that I would start to vomit! my doctor told me to take only Tylenol, extra strength was best. He did however advise against taking anything else, even if it was made by Tylenol. No cough and cold meds, just Tylenol. Maybe ask your doctor, or a nurse at your hospital. Just phone. Oh ya, and he said if I absolutely needed cough drops, take halls and drink lots of water with them.

"Symptoms of cold and flu should be treated separately while breastfeeding rather than using combination products that contain pseudoephedrine. This ingredient can occasionally cause breastfed babies to become irritable, and restless, particularly if the baby is less than three months of age. For nasal congestion, consider using nasal sprays containing oxymetazoline, xylometazoline or tramazoline rather than taking combination cold and flu tablets. Lozenges and gargles are safe for sore throats, though it is best to avoid gargles containing povidone iodine as this product can affect the baby. Single ingredient cough mixtures (eg. pholcodine for a dry cough, and guaiphenesin or bromhexine for a chesty cough) are safe while breastfeeding. Avoid cough mixtures that contain pseudoephedrine."
