My friend had a pet fox, and yes they are cute, but they are independent like cats and don't really want to play with people all that much. Also, they are nocturnal, so they sleep all day and a sleepy fox that you have awakened is a GRUMPY fox!

They just really aren't that interested in getting petted of cuddled. They aren't mean about rejecting you (like biting or growling) they are more like a cat that doesn't want to be held-- squirmy.

Also, you have to keep them caged (even in the house) when you aren't actively playing with them or they will run off. My friends fox got out and now lives on the ranch behind her house. It comes up to get food, but runs back to its den.

My friend got hers theough a breeder, and the breeder has bred them for a LOT of generations (over 50) and they show no signs of becoming domestic. It takes centuries to completely (or mostly) domesticate an animal, and that is only if the animal finds that it has a good association with humans. Foxes are often chased, shot at and trapped, so they learn to fear humans at an early age.

Most individual foxes are too independent.

Cuteness has little effect when one is looking at the missing poultry from the farm yard or hen-house.

The Russians spend years trying to domesticate the silver fox with mixed results.

They are skittish creatures. There's nothing more pathetic than a fox in a cage.
