For a serious road trip, just go to Circle or Eagle in winter. You need the gear, the vehicle and the skill if any weather blows in. One time I was shoveling, by hand, the roadway over the pass to get back from Circle. Some of the wind-blown snow berms were 2-3 feet high. Got down the other side and all the 4WD F-350s and Jeeps and semi-tractors were waiting for the state snow plow to come. And I pop out in my Corolla!
So just getting to the end of the public road in snow or mud season can be quite a workout. Check out some of the obscure roadways, small towns and hot springs around. At least if you get stuck, someone else will be along that say.
Living 600 miles to the south, I don't know of particular trails but for full-sized motor vehicles, I'd suggest two approaches:
- a local bookstore may have a local guidebook on off-road locales or, more generally, on wilderness/hunting access.
- look around on Google Earth (satellite imagery) - I find stuff really close to home that I didn't know was there
If you decide to get into "fourwheelers" (ATCs), then:
- you can ride alongside the state highways on those little frontage road/trails legallly. Just come to stop before crossing the roadway at a right angle.
- ask at a Yamaha/Honda/Polaris dealer where to go for beginning/intermediate trails.
- join a local fourwheeler club. There's one down here that takes trip and does trail maintenance service projects in the Caribou Hills. Probably something in your area too.
Either way, consider what emergency gear you have with you. You know - in case the afternoon drive ends up being an extended camping trip with the truck stuck in a mudhole.
Oh, and a negative recommendation: DON'T take it north on the Tundra. Two hunters just recently drove off the Dalton Highway to retrieve some caribou meat. Got totally stuck. They'll have to jack it up onto blocks, wait for the ground to freeze and then drive it out over frozen ground in a few mmonths. And it hasn't been decided how much they'll be fined.

the excellent off street automobile is a mercedes g55 amg in case you may take care of to pay for it if no longer. The Nissan xterra, toyota 4 runner, Pathfinders, toyota highlander, honda ridgeline, toyota fj crusier even however they are fairly grotesque, All eastern trucks, Mercedes glk, Mercedes g class, Mercedes gl, Mercedes ml, and in case you want a benz suv it quite is reliable on gas get a diesel they are no longer to undesirable and you may supply in vegetable oil, Audi q5 is okay no longer possibly that reliable, Bowler wild cat is via far the excellent yet its fairly costly and you cant discover it in north united statesa., its fairly shitty on gas, and not luxury in any respect. that is fairly lots basically made for off street and not the rest. yet i individually think of that the nissan xterra is the excellent all around off street suv, because of fact in comparison maximum suv's its to no longer undesirable on gas, its very solid and astonishing off street.are not getting any shitty american autos.
