A lot of operators and secretaries I hear on the phone for companies sound really really super duper cute. I can just imagine them looking so pretty. Can you tell if someone is attractive most of the time just by phone? I met one secretary who I was on the phone with nice voice...when I got there she was cute.
Additional details for those into science: They found out that women could tell which men are attractive just by voice recognition. Attractive not as in physical looks necessarily(but by how successful they are at dating). I didn't see the guys fo the study. Women are more in tune with feelings rather than physical attraction anyway. I am wondering if physical attractiveness can usually be extrapolated just from the voice.

No, you can't. I've met a guy who is on the radio & he says that he's been told he has a perfect voice for radio -but unfortunately a perfect face for radio as well.
Made a reservation for a restaurant once & the voice was very sexy and sultry. When we arrived at the restaurant, the hostess (who was short, heavyset & rather plain looking) greeted us in the same sexy voice we'd heard over he phone. Great voice, but quite average appearance-wise.
I have also heard some great sounding voices & later met the person who was stunning looking as well.
So it's really a hit & miss situation -you can't necessarily tell.

Sometimes...my friends mother says that she can tell if people can sing by their speaking voice. She's a voice teacher. I think people can be attracted to someone by listening to them talk. Voices are distinctive and often get ingrained in your mind. It will help you make mental pictures of people. However it doesn't work all the time. I saw on some show earlier this week, a kind of heavy set girl was a phone sex operator. The guys on the other line probably thought she looked a certain way.

Well, most of the time I can tell by their voice whether or not they are cute or handsome. But, sometimes, they turn out to be super assholes or extremely ugly. So, it's not the voice that is the biggest determination of handsome, cute, or attractiveness. Some of the ugliest people have sexy voices. I know, I've seen one after I talked to him. Some voices just don't match up with the physical or/and character.

I've fallen into that trap a few times. Back when I was in college, I started out working at a "staff" room and people had to call in from different satellite locations to report for their shift.
There were quite a few people (men and women) who had amazing voices. Some very smooth, some downright sexy, some that I wanted to rip off my clothes just upon hearing their voices...
Absolutely NONE of them was attractive. A couple of the women were attractive once you got to know them though.
Never trust the sound of the voice to = attractiveness.

It can be tricky. You can be deceived.
When I was younger, I used to listen to this particular Public Radio station. There was this announcer that had the most wonderful voice. I admired him very much. I imagined him to be very special,educated, and attractive. Then after I graduated from college i went to work to this station and I got to meet my idol, and Surprise!, he wasn't close to what I had envisioned: He had a huge ego. He was very short, bow legged and he dressed in polyester suits. And he was a womanizer and an alcoholic too. I am not a shallow person, but the thing is I was very upset when I saw him in person. I doubt it. The girls on the sex hotlines are suppose to have sexy voices and they have to sound like they are "attractive", you'll never know if they are attractive or not.

Okay - I personally can never tell. Rock star singers always sound SO HOT to me, then they turn out to be butt ugly.
