It's a lot like veganism- a cry for attention.

Atheism is to an atheist what (insert religion here) is to a follower of that religion. It's a label so that people can know what they're about just like a Methodist, Wiccan, whatever. Being an atheist means you don't have a religion telling you what to believe, so your thoughts and ideas can change on a daily basis. Some agnostics switch back and forth between atheism and being agnostic.

If you are religious, did you just wake up one day and declare yourself whatever religion you are? No, it's the same thing. You're born to a family with those beliefs, or you adapt them over time (yes they are beliefs).

No group of people can be lumped together, there are no absolutes, and so to say that atheists are supposed to be considered smart and intellectual is unfounded. To be an atheist, a true atheist, there is a lot of thinking involved. People who are atheists for the most part do not believe what they are told until they have cold hard facts or something logical to substantiate it. That is why many atheists come across as intelligent. They aren't just regurgitating propaganda, and are more willing to converse than to just call names and say you're wrong.

I'm an atheist and have always been one. I just don't think the evidence suggests that God exists. And you can consider me smart and intellectual if you like, although I should warn you that not ALL atheists are smart and intellectual.

I don't think so. Everyone has a reason for choosing a certain religion. Maybe atheists couldn't find the right one for them. I don't think they consider themselves smart or intellectual because they're just going with what feels right to them.

It is not your religion that makes you smart & intellectual.

It is your experiences and your quest for knowledge that makes you smart & intellectual. Just like, I've met smart & intellectual:

Buddhists, Taoists, Muslims, Hindus, Christians, Catholics, free thinkers...

I don't think all atheists think that they are cool by being so-called atheists....It is just those "Wanna-bes"....trying to act cool...

Cheers...

I think a lot of them do it for the attention. A lot of them have GOT to tell you they are atheists, who cares? I have a lot of strange beleifs but I don't have to randomly interject them into a conversation just to start an argument with someone. It's simply a rebelion issue, they have faith in unseen things but won't admit there is the possibility God exists. They can't see the electricity in the wiring of their homes but they have faith that the lights will come on every time they flip the switch! There's a million other examples I won't get into. I do agree that a lot of them seem to try and get you to think they are too "smart" to think God exists, they can't be fooled like the rest of the sheep. I say to them, you're idiots if you have to make atheisim "who you are."

I think they often place their beliefs more in science, rather than believe in a supreme being. I think atheists are generally highly-educated individuals but that doesn't make their conclusion about the existence of a god the correct conclusion.

it doesnt matter what they are considered, they have just as much right to Not Believe as others have To Believe. Leave them alone, they are people too.

They thought about what they do and don't believe. I don't think they view themselves as cool, they believe that they have the right not to believe
