The standard catty when I was a lad was a carefully selected piece of a tree branch about 5/8" diameter Y shaped with a nice even balance on the forks, the preferred rubber was 1/4" square black rubber about a yard long this was cut into two equal pieces and bound on the fork ends using fine elastic if available, or thin cord ,the sling was cut out of an old boot ,black for preference and this was bound in the same way, small pebbles were the ammunition or small ball bearings, or an arrow could be shot with comparable accuracy to a longbow. Ah me misspent youth.

I do not know a free source for this, but I know a book written by a friend, called "backyard ballistics" by William Gurstelle. It has step by step directions to build all sorts of machines, including a catapult, that can send a tennis ball 40ft.

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.

Two old fashioned clothes pegs stuck together like a V, use string to bind them, lots of it, so you get a good grip on it,
On the tips tie together lots of elastic bands and then tie the ends
together.
The proper stuff you can buy from a gun and tackle shop,
