What would be the wise choice? If you had the option of purchasing a 1996 Taylor 912CE guitar in excellent condition - or a 2006 Taylor 814CE guitar (pretty much new) for practically the same price - which one would be the wiser choice to buy?

I'd take the 912. You said the 814 is 'new', so, you are basically paying the money to put scratches in it. The 912 will hold it's value a little better while the 814 will depreciate more rapidly. Then again it's all about the sound and feel of the guitars, they are slightly different body types, if you cant try them out first, go to a guitar store and try the two body styles out.
FUGETABOUT these guys with their Gibson/Strat quips.

Personally, I'd go with the 912 for the wood alone. However, the 814 will have the newer amplification electronics. For much better answers and lots of discussion, visit the Taylor Forum at:

Either way, you'll probably be happy. I have a 2000 812C... and added my own Highlander IP2, so there would be no holes cut in the side of the guitar. I love it.
Above all, ignore the idiots who think they can compare Martin, Gibson and Fender to Taylor. I own some of those as well, but one really shouldn't compare apples to oranges.

I say go for the Taylor 814CE, it has a great sound, great look, and if its pretty much new then you know what to expect. You'll be able to break it in yourself and make it comfortable for you.

Pick up a Ibanez RG series guitar, has fast action on the neck and you will get blues tones to high pitched screams! depending on your mood.
