The rule of thumb is 2 gallons per inch for goldfish. Note that goldfish grow quickly. Most people recommend 5-10 gallons per goldfish. These of course assumes that you aren't over feeding, the tank has enough filtering, and you are cleaning the tank with a gravel vacuum once a week.

Since my last post, I have learned much about goldfish, so I would say that the correct answer is NONE.
Even a 10 gallon is too small for even one goldfish. I am just waiting for a tank sale at petsmart and then my 3 (I said medium, but they are actually small, 2.5 inches) fish will be moving to a 40 gal palace.

We just bought three medium size fantail gold fish, and then I read that our ten gallon tank is much too small. They certainly seem very comfortable and the gravel looks clean after a week. I can see that, because the gravel is about 3" deep and I can see from the side if it s very dirty. My tank has a filter.

generally it's a gallon per inch of fish, 10 4 inch fish that are about an inch wide, 50 gallon tank. but goldfish crap alot so it's actually a bigger tank to keep them or a really good filter.

at this stage you could have 50 or 60 in there providing that you have proper filtration and aeration. in a 5 gal tank the fish will grow to be 2-2.5 inches long . at that stage you should probably have no more than 10 or 15 if you plan to keep them for a while. the larger the tank you keep them in, the larger they will grow.
