Its called a hollywod patch. Get some extra drywall and cut the exact size of the hole on the back of the drywall, only score it. Then flip it over and cut the front a couple inches wider that the hole itself. Pull of the chalk and the backing very carefully leaving that couple inch flap (paper) on the front while leaving the chalk/backing that is the exact size of the hole. Then throw some drywall compound behind the flaps and stick it up. Smooth it by removing the excess mud behind the flaps (Like taping and embedding) throw a layer of compound over the top..let it dry...sand it and add another layer of topping over it..sand and your done. If its a larger hole then you want to do the same thing except maybe throw a 2x4 behind it for extra support.

Use a dry wall knife and cut out a hole so you the studs on two side. Remove material so half the stud is open.
Then cut a piece of drywall of same thickness, to fit in the hole.
install the piece on the studs with drywall screws.
Apply plastic drywall tape around the joint, and then patch with
joint compound. Let it dry and apply another coat till you see nice smooth surface.
Sand the surface with sander. paint with primer first.
then paint with ceiling paint.
