The words deal with skin color and geographical formation.

"Mel" comes from the Greek word for "black" Melanesians are people with very dark skin who come from the equatorial part of the South Pacific. Their almost constant exposure to solar radiation has made their bodies produce massive amounts of the biochemical melanin. Melanin is the biochemical produced by every human being, except for albinos, who have a genetic defect. People who have the least exposure to solar radiation produce the smallest amount of melanin. So, Swedes and Norwegians tend to be very fair, have blue eyes, and sport naturally blond hair.

Micronesians get their name from the tiny size of the Pacific Islands that they inhabit. "Micro" is from the Greek word for "small." But, in all other ways, they are similar to Melanesians.

Polynesians are fairly recent emigrants to the cluster of islands in the Pacific that lie considerably north of the other Pacific Islanders. The Polynesian Islands are north of the equator, about the same latitude as Hong Kong or Cuba. "Poly" is from the Greek word for "many." It is believed that present-day Polynesians are a genetic mix of many different strands. This gives them their unique skin color; however, they developed their own unique culture through trial and error, learning, and socialization.
