Most of the time a red moon appears during a Lunar Eclipse. Full moons that are red moons are rare. I have seen one before. Some red moons are new moons (not visible) which really stinks. Whatever the moon phase is the look of the red moon. I don't know exact dates.

Things in space look more red when they are close to the horizon. This is where their light has to pass through the most atmosphere to get to our eyes and is distorted in the process. This is what happens with setting suns, red moons, and even stars.

The Moon does not become invisible, though, because there is still residual sunlight that is deflected towards it by the Earth's atmosphere, most of which is light in the red part of the spectrum.
