My family is swedish and dutch, so when I was a child my mum would make headcheese(trust me you don't want to know what it is) and pickled herring.
My uncle would bring the swedish version of peroghies, with salt pork in it. Those would be the appetizers for the adults. My dad would make up his own tobasco sauce for the shrimp ring. And there'd be cookies, chips and dip. Christmas music playing.
My mum would cook at least a 30 lb turkey with sage stuffing, have mashed potatoes and mashed turnips, a jello salad, kernel corn, for the main meal. Gravy of course too.
Then we'd have christmas cake and cookies and coffee of course.
We'd go to Lutheran candlelight services at 11 pm come home they'd have more coffee and cookies and I and my brother went to bed to awail Santa Claus.
We'd open the ' family' gifts christmas eve in between the meal and going to church. It was a wonderful time.
Now I just make turkey and all the fixings for myself. Watch the Crystal Cathedral Christmas services and then Christmas movies until I get tired and go to bed.

Whatever the hostess plans - we all bring something sort of like a potluck dinner. We'll have a huge roast with all the trimmings, roast turkey, cured deer meat, cured buffalo meat - or even spaghetti one time when the hostess was weary! We eat until we can't eat anymore, and then we open presents. Christmas AM we open one special gift that has been reserved from Christmas Eve and our Christmas stockings - and then a marvelous breakfast...and then we spend the next year losing all that weight!

One Christmas Eve I go to my sister's house and we eat a reagular dinner, it is Christmas Day we have the big dinner. But on Christmas Eve we have a family home evening and sing some songs and my sister reads the birth of Jesus to us, and then she usually reads a couple other short stories and we exchange 1 gift (we draw names around Thanksgiving for the exchange gifts for Christmas Eve and Day) and then open that gift and 1 other one.
It is a time for family and since I live alone, I go to her home with her family and on Christmas Eve and Day, my son joins us.
I stay at her home that night, and the kids try go get me in trouble, by waking me up so I will wake up everyone else. Hey, when I was a kid, that is what my sister and 3 older brothers did to me. They would wake me up and say "Go see what Santa brought you." of course my mom knew they put me up to it, then she would have me go back to the room until Dad got a fire going. So you see, my sister is getting payback.

Work, and if I'm lucky, I get off early. Then squeeze in a quick (fast-food) dinner before heading to church (my favorite part) for Carols and worship songs to our rock band. For the last song we light candles, which everybody gets (except the little kids) and we pass the flame until every ones candle is lit. After the song we blow out the candles, visit a little and go home. We have some dessert when we get home and maybe the kids get to open 1 gift before bed time (early enough so they can play with it). I spend the rest of Christmas eve wrapping the gifts that I couldn't find time to wrap (without the kids around). If I'm lucky, I can get some sleep before sunrise. (I wrap slowly when I'm half awake.)

We usually go to church. Food is usually snacking from all the yummy treats we have been given or made. We let the kids open one present.....usually Jammie's and new slippers (so they will look cute on Christmas morning). Then we put on music and finish all the last minute stuff and go to bed. We always have our big meal with family on Christmas day.
