The Mexican Spinytail Iguana (Ctenosaura pectinata) lives in arid areas in Mexico and as far north as southern Texas. They are brown lizards with a series of long scales the run down their tail. They grow to be about 4 feet long.
What you are refering to as the South American Iguana is probably the common Green Iguana (Iguana Iguana). This lizard lives in the rainforests of central and South America. It is green in color and can grow to be 6 feet long.

Not much difference really, after all they are on the same Continent. South American iguanas have a tendency to be shyer, a little larger and greener in color. This is mainly because South America is hotter and larger, but they are same species.

I don't think there is any major difference between the two except for their habitats.
